“What I really like is what I’ve never done before”

These were the words of the world-famous designer as he stepped foot in Toronto for the first time to kick off his partnership with Freed Developments back in 2015. A leading figure in the world of fashion design for more than half a century, Karl Lagerfeld has been called many things; a designer, photographer, creative director, and publisher. Above all, Karl was simply a visionary.

Though he established his reputation through work with prestigious fashion houses and his own personal brand, he never hesitated to take his talents beyond the world of fashion. Karl Lagerfeld lived by the philosophy that change was the healthiest way to survive. He lived by his word by extending his repertoire through several creative outlets such as photography, costume design, illustration, and book publishing. Karl Lagerfeld’s constant interest to new experiences made this opportunity with Freed Developments a special one – and resulted in an iconic statement and lasting impression on the city of Toronto.

Peter Freed believed partnering with Lagerfeld was a natural choice for the Art Shoppe Lofts+ Condos project, which embraced a spirit of globality and world-class status. “He’s a design genius, one of the most interesting, talented designers in the world and to have him touch the project with his creativity is a real privilege.” The partnership with Lagerfeld continues the Freed tradition of working with internationally renowned artists and builds on a strong repertoire of Toronto-based design firms integral to the project including Cecconi and Simone and architectsAlliance.

The Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos was a legacy project that marked a major modernization of the Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood. A symbol of the power that architecture and design have in shaping the way we experience the world. Slated to be a masterpiece from Day 1, the iconic design virtuoso was tasked to bring his philosophy and expertise to the Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos lobbies.

"I am always looking for opportunities to expand my range of creative expression and am excited by the opportunity to design this in Toronto, Canada as part of the Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos. I'm excited to be part of the CD Capital & Freed approach to the Art of Change."

Karl Lagerfeld

Modern, glamorous, and inspiring. Karl’s vision was to create a seductive environment that welcomes you with a timeless and sophisticated elegance. These lobbies were Karl Lagerfeld’s vision of what it meant to live extraordinarily. Luxuriously furnished, graceful and defined lines, subtle yet unexpected details, a space that evokes wonder and romance.

The Soudan Lobby

Modern, glamorous, and inspiring. Karl’s vision was to create a seductive environment that welcomes you with a timeless and sophisticated elegance. These lobbies were Karl Lagerfeld’s vision of what it meant to live extraordinarily. Luxuriously furnished, graceful and defined lines, subtle yet unexpected details, a space that evokes wonder and romance.

The Hillsdale Lobby

Exquisitely tailored and elegantly proportioned. The Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos are a true example of Karl Lagerfeld’s effortless blending of contemporary trends and classic style. With a masterful design approach and consummate eye for beauty, the lobbies are welcoming yet mysterious – you can’t help but linger.

“It was a real privilege just to meet him (Karl Lagerfeld), let alone work with him,” Peter Freed explains. “It made the project more fun, it made it more exciting and it just made it more memorable. And that will be translated into the project itself.” And it sure did. The Art Shoppe Lofts + Condos have been sold out for years, which further demonstrates the lasting impact that incredible design has in enhancing people’s lives.

There are not many people that can say they had the pleasure of working with such a great inspiration. With his passing, we have truly lost a creative genius who helped shape the fashion and design world. His taste and talent were exceptional, and those lucky enough to pass through the Soudan and Hillsdale lobbies are reminded of that every day. As we reflect back and celebrate his legendary career, we are grateful for Karl Lagerfeld’s contributions to raising awareness of Toronto as a city, and Freed Developments.
