Properties and Developments
A refined and minimal glass-walled jewel-box with only 85 high-ceilinged loft-styled condominium units, 66 Portland is a small boutique of a building that has nonetheless made a big impact on the Toronto condo scene.“Just south of King, and a block from the park, 66 Portland is just a phenomenal city corner,” says Peter Freed. “A lot of effort and attention to detail went into it, because it was our first project and we wanted to set the tone by letting everybody know we were interested in a new and design-centered approach.” Project type: 9 storey, 85 unit loft residential condominiums

The differences lie in the finishes: 20 Stewart features black instead of white birch, and pebbled green, rather than clear glass.
“It’s essential to us that each building have its own individual character,” says Peter Freed. “If, like the typical Toronto condo developer, we ever start banging out the same building over and over again, then we should get out of the business.” Project type: 9 storey, 59 loft residential condominiums

A clean-lined, glass-framed stair provides a strong vertical element. Spare and elegantly proportioned, 455 Adelaide refreshes the urban streetscape with a building that is both radically contemporary and respectful of its site.
“What attracted us to this project in the first place was its central location, right across from a city park, with two strong frontages on Adelaide Street and on Morrison,” says Peter Freed. “So we used that natural L-shape as a stepping-off point for the building’s unique design.” Project type: 10 storey, 93 loft condominiums and 10 townhouses

Set on a picturesque and rolling 850-acre site which is slightly larger than New York’s Central Park, Freed saw the vast potential of the property, which is located across the street from the new Muskoka Wharf project and abuts a 2000 acre conservation area on its south boundary.
Designed by acclaimed course architect Doug Carrick and voted best new course in Canada, the Muskoka Bay Club also boasts a 20,000 square foot clubhouse with an infinity pool built on a 100 foot cliff overlooking the first fairway.
“We kept the course largely separated from residential development, so that it would have a natural feel to the environment,” says Peter Freed, who, true to form, designed the club as a fine-boned collection of contemporary villas rather than the traditional, and run-of-the-mill Muskoka architectural offering. The site, which Peter Freed describes as “the best site in the whole of downtown Toronto,” faces directly south onto the historic and charming Victoria Memorial park, with grand exposures on both Wellington and Bathurst streets. By opening up and surrendering 30,000 square feet of potential condo space to public green space, Freed enabled the park to “breathe into the building.”
When completed, the stunning project will include, along with 336 exquisitely designed and lavishly appointed condominiums, a Thompson Hotel, bars, restaurants, room service, a rooftop pool bar, screening room and “every toy you could ask for,” says Peter Freed. “This is my dream place to live.” Project type: 102 room designer hotel and 336 unit condominium

“My whole career, ever since I first walked into Miami’s Delano hotel, I’ve dreamed of working with Philippe Starck,” says Peter Freed. “The entire project is very unique because of his fingerprint.” Project type: 215 unit residential condominium

A re-imagined historical property wrapped in a boxwood hedge, SIX50 King’s visual juxtaposition of old brick and new, green shoots makes for a contemporary chic, as well as environmentally friendly design statement. Project type: 236 unit residential condominiums

But from Freed Developments’ point of view, that is precisely the point.
“We took a chance here in creating an exclusive property for high-end clients in a part of Toronto that had never seen this type of condominium project,” says Peter Freed, who was pleasantly surprised to discover that its luxury struck a chord with many. “But then we are always motivated to do things a little bit differently just to keep it interesting.” Project type: 17 unit luxury boutique condominium

The project combines and connects the restoration of a silverplate historic building with a sleek new glass construction, that when completed, will house retail and restaurants on its ground level. By retaining 11 up-and-coming Canadian fashion designers to create stunning installations on the landings, the condominium building is transformed, in the words of Peter Freed, into a “modern canvas for personal design expression.”
A sky-park complete with a swimming pool on the rooftop promises to be the height of fashion. Dashing lipstick-red window coverings on the building’s exteriors (all of which shine a crisp, clean white inside) complete the fashion-forward design statement.
